Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely used indicator of healthy body weight based on your height and weight. It is calculated as:
BMI = weight (kg) / [height (m)]2
- BMI is a quick screening tool for weight categories: underweight, normal, overweight, and obesity.
- BMI does not measure body fat directly, but it correlates with more direct measures of body fat.
- It is less accurate for athletes and the elderly.
BMI Categories (WHO):
- Underweight: < 18.5
- Normal weight: 18.5 – 24.9
- Overweight: 25 – 29.9
- Obese: 30 or higher
